  • November 2009 - Dr. Douglas Worsnop named to the AAAR Board of Directors for 2010-2011.  The American Association for Aerosol Research is a nonprofit professional organization whose vision is to provide scientific forums and publications in all aspects of aerosol research, to encompass the diverse technical disciplines utilizing aerosol technology, and to engender aerosol research and innovation of the highest quality.  Association membership represents all areas of aerosol science including: Global Environment, Microcontamination, Air Pollution, Instrumentation/Measurement, Aerosol Chemistry, Material Synthesis, Aerosol Physics, Pharmaceutical Aerosols, Occupational and Public Health, Filtration/Separation, Atmospheric Sciences, Combustion, Biological Aerosols, Metrology/Standards, Indoor Air Quality, and Radioactive Aerosols/Nuclear Safety.
     

  • October 2009 - The National Research Council's Committee on the Significance of International Transport of Air Pollutants chaired by Dr. Charles Kolb  has published the report: Global Sources of  Local Pollution: An Assessment of Long-Range Transport of Key Air Pollutants to and from the United States (2009), National Academies Press. The report examines four types of air pollutants: ozone; particulate matter such as dust, sulfates, or soot; mercury; and persistent organic pollutants such as DDT.  The committee found evidence, including satellite observations, that these four types of pollutants can be transported aloft across the Northern Hemisphere, delivering significant concentrations to downwind continents.

    The report was sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NASA, and National Science Foundation.  The National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council make up the National Academies.  They are independent, nonprofit institutions that provide science, technology, and health policy advice under an 1863 congressional charter.  Committee members, who serve pro bono as volunteers, are chosen by the Academies for each study based on their expertise and experience and must satisfy the Academies' conflict-of-interest standards.  At the Committee's EPA sponsor's request Dr. Kolb wiil present
    the report's Findings and Recommendations at the workshop of the UN's Task Force on  Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution in Toronto, 11-13 November. 2009.
     

  • August 2009 - Dr. Charles E. Kolb presents the urban metabolism model of megacities at the 238th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society.
     

  • July 2009 - Dr. Charles E. Kolb has been selected as a member of the inaugural class of Fellows of the American Chemical Society for his outstanding contributions to the chemical sciences and service to the ACS and the chemistry community.  The announcement was made in the July 27, 2009 issue of  ACS  Chemical & Engineering News.
     

  • January 2009 - Aerodyne Research is pleased to announce that Dr. David D. Nelson has been elected a fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA).  Dr. Nelson was recognized by OSA "for innovation in infrared spectroscopy and its application to environmental science, assessment and monitoring, and industrial process optimization and control. "  Dr. Nelson has worked at Aerodyne since 1989 and is currently co-Director of the Center for Atmospheric and Environmental Chemistry and Aerodyne's Vice President of Operations.  The official announcement of the OSA fellowship awards is posted on the OSA website at http://www.osa.org/aboutosa/awards/fellows/recentfellows/2009.aspx
     

  • April 2008 - Dr. Richard Miake-Lye is presented with a copy of the Nobel Peace Prize certificate bestowed on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2007.  The copy is awarded to scientists who have contributed substantially to the work of the IPCC since its inception.
     

  • February 2008 - Aerodyne Research Inc. research scientists, mobile laboratory and papers are featured in Environmental Science & Technology News article "Characterizing Airplane Plumes on the Runway", February 20, 2008.
     

  • ARI's advanced air pollution instruments, its mobile air quality laboratory and several ARI staff members are featured in a new video entitled "Air Pollution", one of 13 ~half hour videos that form the core of of a new environmental science course for high school teachers and college level instruction. The course is entitled Habitable Planet; A Systems Approach to Environmental Science and was prepared by the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics' Science Media Group with sponsorship from the Annenberg Foundation.  The course is being distributed by Annenberg Media where interested viewers can register to stream the course videos.
     

  • January 2008 - Aerodyne partners with the Mystic View Tack Force and the Tufts Community Research Center to measure and characterize highway pollution as part of a research study on health effects of pollution near highways.
     

  • December 2007 - Dr. Charles E. Kolb named chair of the 2008 American Society Committee on Environmental Improvement (CEI) for the third year.  The Environmental Committee is promoting sustainability.
     

  • August 2007 - The Aerodyne Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS) is cited in Department of the Navy SBIR/STTR Success stories by the Office of Naval Research.  The AMS was successfully deployed on a Twin Otter research aircraft for the Naval Post Graduate School in conjunction with the California Institute of Technology during the Marine Aerosol Stratus Experiment.
     

  • June 2007 - Dr. Douglas Worsnop accepts the Aerodyne Research Inc.  Department of Energy Firm of the Year Award for our contributions to the Office of Science Atmospheric Science Program (ASP) in the Office of Biological and Environmental Research.  Aerodyne’s Phase II SBIR project, “Development of a Versatile Aircraft Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS) for Organic Aerosol Analysis,” produced important new information in the analysis of atmospheric aerosols during the Megacity Aerosol eXperiment in Mexico City (MAX-Mex) in March 2006.
     

  • May 2007 - Dr. Richard Miake-Lye accepts the 2007 EPA Climate Protection Award for work with the Joint Strike Fighter Emission Test Team.    The team developed a test that allows scientists to gauge the contribution of jet aircraft particulate emissions to global climate change. The Climate Protection Partnership Division of the EPA recognizes exceptional leadership, outstanding innovation, personal dedication and technical achievements in protecting the climate.
     

  • February 2007 - Dr. Douglas R. Worsnop recognized as a Fellow of The American Geophysical UnionAGU has a diverse program for recognizing members and others who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of the geophysical sciences, to the service of the community, and to the public’s understanding. This honor is conferred upon not more than 0.1% of all AGU members in any given year.
     

  • September 2006 - Dr. Dougas R. Worsnop is awarded a distinguished professor position with the Academy of Finland.  The FiDiPro programme is a funding programme jointly launched by the Academy of Finland and Tekes with the aim of recruiting professor-level top researchers.  The goal of the Finland Distinguished Professor Programme (FiDiPro) is to raise the level of scientific and technological knowledge and know-how in Finland and add a more international element to the Finnish research system.
     

  • February 2006 - Dr. Barry McManus elevated to rank of Fellow by the Board of Directors of The Optical Society of America for the design, fabrication, and utilization of innovative tunable infrared laser instruments to address air quality and global change issues.
     

  • October 27, 2005 - Dr. Douglas R. Worsnop of Aerodyne Research, Inc. has been awarded the distinction of AAAS Fellow.  Election as a Fellow is an honor bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers.
     

  • October 20, 2005 - Dr. Charles E. Kolb, President, awarded the 25th Henry A. Hill Memorial Award for his outstanding contributions to the Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society.  "2005 Henry A. Hill Award to C.E. Kolb," The Nucleus, October 2005.
     

  • May 16, 2005 - Stephen Jones of Aerodyne received the One NASA Peer Award in recognition for his role in developing the Hyperspectral Polarimeter for Aerosol Retrievals (HySPAR)  for  the team effort of developing the NASA Active-Passive Airborne Instrument Suite for Aerosol Measurement.
     

  • October 8, 2004 - Dr. Douglas R. Worsnop, Vice President, and Dr. John T. Jayne, Principle Scientist, are the recipients of the 2004 Benjamin Y. H. Liu Award for their achievements in atmospheric composition measurement with the Aerodyne mass spectrometer system (AMS). This award honors Benjamin Y. H. Liu for his leadership in the aerosol community and  "recognizes outstanding contributions to aerosol instrumentation and experimental techniques that have significantly advanced the science and technology of aerosols."
     

  • July 2004 - The Aerodyne Research QC-TILDAS Ammonia Monitor is EPA/ETV verified for ambient ammonia monitoring.  The results of the verification test of the EPA Environmental Technology Verification Program (ETV) for the instrument are summarized in the Verification Statement.  A complete description of the technology, verification method and procedures, and detailed results of the test on the Aerodyne Research QC-TILDAS Ammonia Monitor are given in the verification report
