Our R&D staff is organized into six technology centers which address a wide range of topics requiring expertise in the physical and engineering sciences.

Research Centers:

Center for Aerosol and Cloud Chemistry

CACC performs laboratory and field experiments to understand chemical processes associated with aerosol and cloud particles in the atmosphere. CACC develops advanced measurement and analysis techniques for the chemical composition and size of aerosol particles, and for gas-particle interactions, in order to understand ambient aerosol. We also build state-of-the-art research instrumentation that is unique in its capability for sampling, sizing, and chemically analyzing laboratory and ambient aerosols with high time resolution and real-time results.

Center for Atmospheric and Environmental Chemistry

CAEC develops high sensitivity trace gas monitors and performs laboratory and field experiments to improve our understanding of atmospheric chemistry. Research topics include chemical kinetics, ozone depletion chemistry, global climate change, photochemical air pollution and the study of atmospheric emissions. We also apply our sensitive molecular monitoring techniques to problems like industrial process monitoring and breath analysis.

Center for Aero-Thermodynamics

CATD measures and simulates chemistry, combustion, and particle microphysics in challenging coupled fluid flow and kinetics problems. State-of-the-art numerical tools and advanced diagnostic measurement techniques are applied to problems including: combustion processes, engine emission characterization, exhaust system design, aerosol formation and evolution, desulfurization of fossil fuels, production of synthetic fuels, and inverse modeling to characterize emissions sources.

Center for Optical Signature Recognition

COSR conceives leading-edge technologies involving optical sensing, discrimination and recognition. These technologies include sensor hardware and signal/pattern processing algorithms, matched to deduce reliable information from various sensing situations. We develop methods essential to the improvement of civil and military geophysical remote sensing and surveillance using an electro-optical/infrared component.

Center for Sensor Systems and Technology

CSST develops, utilizes and delivers innovative push-button sensors and monitors using mostly light-based measurement techniques. The sensor packages are designed to allow for easy integration of the sensor into customer systems. The Center’s focus is mainly on instrumentation suitable for field or factory deployment.
